Project Description
Crime is everywhere. It is an ongoing social challenge that requires continuous effort by the police, government and the public to keep neighbourhoods and cities safe.
To aid in such efforts, Crimedata.my dives into the area of crime analysis in Malaysia. Taking historical crime data released by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) and data sets by iSelamat (an initiative by PDRM and Ministry of Housing & Local Government), detailed crime statistics tell us whether overall safety has improved over the years.
Further analysis reveals which locations have the highest property crime rates, which cities have rampant motorcycle theft, and which areas to look out for snatch thieves.
Crime Data Story
One of the goals of the project is to present the crime situation in Malaysia as accurately as possible with data. The format of a data story allows the public to consume this content easily, and raises awareness on the issues relating to crimes happening in the country.
The story covers these interesting crime statistics and insights:
- Historical crime rates – national and state level
- Latest crime hot spots in the country
- Hidden crime trends and patterns
Crime Data Insights
Using data science and geographical information system (GIS) approaches, in-depth crime data insights can be gathered. Such information is passed on to relevant government agencies for policy making, provided to criminology experts for the use of public service and academics for research.
The project also aims to build an invite-only data api that provides social enterprises or organisations with relevant crime data, for the core purpose of fighting crime.
